I love cultural differences. They are a cause of many interesting and often at times amusing situations when working with foreign guests, but I wonder if they are slowly dying out? Are we as people getting to be more and more alike?There is an old and dear friend of mine from Singapore. We met online some years ago and have lost touch for a couple of years during which time she got married and I got engaged. When she came to Dubrovnik with her husband in 2008, my (now) wife and I managed to spend some time with them and found we shared many things in common with this far away couple. One would think people from places as different as Singapore and Dubrovnik live completely different lives. Instead it turns out wives in Singapore eat half of their husband's ice cream when they say they just want a taste, just as they do in Dubrovnik. Another couple we enjoyed meeting are two wonderful Canadians of European descent. They visited our restaurant on their trip around the world and after getting hung up in conversation with them we discovered they were just as easy to relate to and understand.I can think of many other examples, but the point is always the same. Sometimes people you meet for the first time in your life very quickly stop being „a couple from ...“ and become Jack and Lucy, or Olga and Igor, or whatever their names are. They stop being strangers as soon as the conversation starts and you feel there is no need for much censorship or beating around the bush.Why is this so? Is globalisation doing what many have foretold and erasing or at least blurring cultural differences? It can't be just a generation thing as I've had similar experiences with people older than myself as well. Maybe it's just the “Global Village” effect of the Internet. I'd like to think that it's not about the technology or globalisation at all. I want to believe that it is simply natural human behaviour. When good, positive people meet, they get along regardless of where they’re from.So, go and start mingling globally.
