So Much to Do, so Little Time

The way in which guests enjoy dining in Dubrovnik during peak season differs significantly from off season periods. The city offers much more to choose from when it comes to night life during summer so guests that come for dinner in our restaurant always seem to be in a hurry. They probably are. They have other places to go and things to do that evening. Off season, guests tend to stay longer and enjoy their dinner more as that may well be the highlight of their evening. Question is who is making better use of their time: guests who visit five different places in one night along with crowds of other people, or those that stay longer in one spot and enjoy a more intimate company of a loved one or close friends?I was just thinking about this a few days ago when it occurred to me that I myself usually stuff my vacation days with plenty of activities. For me, planning and preparation starts weeks ahead of the trip. Once there I will have a thorough plan of what to do and where to go. Timetable will be provided and a checklist of some sort is always an integral part of the experience, much to my wife's dismay. You could say she doesn't share my enthusiasm for keeping our holidays as efficient as possible. She will often complain about 8:00am wake up calls and carefully timed coffee breaks. With modern travel industry constantly evaluating destinations according to entertainment and dining options therein, the focus seems to be on giving one’s holiday too much structure. Perhaps, all those „bells and whistles“ are preventing us from getting a more profound connection with the people and the place we are visiting. Ever since I've started writing this column I've been advising guests to Dubrovnik to take it easy, to relax, and to take the time to enjoy the sights and sounds of this foreign place. It's a clear case of „do as I say, not as I do“. Maybe the way I travel is wrong after all. Worse yet, maybe my wife is right.
