Facebook to open data centre in Croatia

Facebook could soon be investing in Croatia with news that the social media giant is researching the possibility of constructing a data centre in the country. According to an article in the business publication, Poslovni Dnevnik, Facebook are planning to build a 30,000m² data centre in Croatia which will be used to store information such as users photos and videos.Poslovni Dnevnik adds that if the Facebook data centre is built it will be the only data centre outside of the US that Facebook own. Although there are three existing centres already in Europe, including one in Sweden, all of these centres are leased. These centres are basically filled with thousands of computers, all linked together as well as the rest of the internet through fibre optic cables. Facebook has more than one billion active users and therefore a huge amount of data is uploaded every day.The Croatia company Emerson, which has been making great leaps in the construction of data centres have confirmed that they are talks with Facebook. The director of Emerson, Luka Gaspar, commented that “Croatia is a world leader in the technology of modular data centres, and Emerson is the largest such player in the world and we currently work everywhere.” It is believed that the planned data centre in Croatia would serve Facebook users in Southern Europe, the Middle East and Northern Africa.
