Traffic chaos and miles of jams as business and bureaucracy collide
21. kolovoza 2015. - 13:30
The traffic chaos in Srebreno, Zupa is about to get much worse. All summer long drivers have had to be very patient as the construction of the SUB City shopping centre and the Sheraton hotel has meant long delays. These delays are about to get much worse as both these objects are planned to be opened within days of each other. The main coastal road, the D-8, which runs through the middle of Zupa has been a traffic black-spot all summer. This main road runs all the way down the Croatian coast and therefore is the transit road for tourists to and from Montenegro and Albania. The D-8 is always busy with tourist traffic through the summer months and now with the opening of the SUB City shopping centre and the five-star Sheraton hotel the situation will be even worse. Locals in the Zupa borough are happy that they will have a new shopping centre and a five-star hotel but at the same time worried that the traffic will be at a standstill. The traffic lights on the D-8 have been a bottleneck since they were installed, however until a solution for the flow of pedestrians over this busy intersection is found the traffic lights must remain in place. The Borough of Zupa has announced that the police will regulate the traffic lights during peak times.Traffic experts have called for the construction of a pedestrian subway, which would at least solve the problem of the safety of pedestrians. However this would only solve one problem, the traffic jams would probably still be chaotic. A solution for this intersection has been under discussion for years, unfortunately it has remained at that level, discussion, without any concrete solutions on the table. The Head of the Borough of Zupa, Silvio Nardelli, pointed out that the reconstruction of the main road at the intersection is certainly a priority. The borough has developed and submitted a preliminary design for the reconstruction of the intersection to Croatia Roads. The deadlines for this new traffic solution are still unknown. However with the shopping centre and the new hotel on the verge of being opened we can expect traffic chaos in the area for the next few months.Follow The Dubrovnik Times on Facebook and Twitter
